Engineers Australia has over 6,000 members in South Australia. The South Australian division is pledged to undertake a variety of important roles to faciliate the advancement of our members' careers and promotion of the engineering profession.
The Inaugural "The Engine Room" Publication
In 2010 the South Australia Division's Division Committee resolved to increase community awareness of engineering's broad purview and the contribution made to our state through the work that engineers undertake. It was decided to produce an "Engineering Wonder" publication which detailed some of the greatest projects undertaken in our state over the period 2000-2010.
Early in 2011 Engineers Australia took a collaborative approach and developed, with The Advertiser, a publication which would be inserted with the daily newspaper. The Advertiser's excellent team of journalists, writers and photographers implemented the realisation of the Division Committee initiative and made it reality.
"The Engine Room" has become an excellent forum for promoting the crucial contribution that the engineering profession has made, with distribution to nearly 200,000 businesses and households. A copy of this publication in electronic format is below.

Niki Robinson MIEAust
President & National Congress Representative 2015/16
Niki Robinson is an environmental engineer with a chemical science qualification. She has over 16 years experience in the water industry, working as a senior project engineer and project manager for both private and public sectors and is currently the Manager of Water and Sewerage Infrastructure Regulation at the Department of State Development.
Within Engineers Australia, Niki is a past Chair of Women in Engineering for Engineers Australia South Australia, and a representative on the National Women in Engineering Committee and National Chemical College Board. She is also heavily involved in the water industry, sitting on the Australian Water Association State Branch Committee and previously on the WaterAid (SA) Fundraising Committee.
Niki is happily married with two young children and in her spare time, enjoys sharing great food and wine with family and friends. She loves being an engineer and immerses herself in engineering and the water industry at every opportunity.
Lachlan Kinnear MIEAust CPEng
Lachlan Kinnear is a civil engineer with health science qualifications working in the state government Olympic Dam Task Force, for the facilitation of the proposed BHP Billiton mining expansion, and the Nyrstar Pt Pirie Smelter redevelopment. His experience has spanned water, commercial construction, health infrastructure, clinical health services in projects, procurement, services and organisational development in the private and government sectors both in Canada and Australia.
Lachlan's professional interests include developing engineers capability in the transition from undergraduate education into the work environment.
Dr Cris Birzer MIEAust CPEng

Dr Cristian Birzer is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Adelaide. His teaching and research interests are in fields of sustainable and renewable energy, humanitarian technology, fluid mechanics and combustion.
Over the last 15 years Cris has served on numerous Engineers Australia committees including Division Committee, Congress, YEA (SA) Committee, Mechanical Branch Committee and 2012 Engineering Leadership Conference Organising Committee. He has also served in the Australia Army Reserves with deployments to East Timor and the Solomon Islands, and RedR with a deployment to Nepal.
Nicola Page MIEAust CPEng

Nicki Page is a chartered principal civil engineer with AECOM and has been working in the Adelaide market for the past 11 years, following her graduation from the University of Adelaide with a BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering. She has been involved in multi-disciplined engineering projects both as engineer and project manager, which has allowed her to understand the importance of variety to encourage open discussion, diverse ideas and to reach a better end solution.
Nicki is also interested in the promotion of the chartered engineering status and the need to encourage all engineers to seek and attain chartered status. She has acted as an official mentor within the AECOM Adelaide office and as an unofficial mentor for many within other organisations. She has been the AECOM Adelaide graduate program coordinator for the previous 6 years.
Andy Milazzo FIEAust CPEng EngExec

Andy Milazzo is an experienced independent transport engineer, adviser and facilitator. He was previously Deputy Chief Executive of the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure and the Executive Director of the Transport Services Division. He has over 35 years experience in highway and transportation engineering and holds a BE(Hons) in Civil Engineering from the University of Adelaide and an ME from Texas A&M University.
Andy is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation in the UK and the Institute of Transportation Engineers in the USA. He is an International Road Federation Fellow and a Confederation of British Industry Scholar and was Australia’s first delegate to the World Road Association. He has been a member of the SA Division's Centre for Engineering Leadership and Management Executive Committee since 2009 and a member of the Division Committee since 2013.
Professor John Beynon FIEAust

Professor John Beynon has been Executive Dean of the University of Adelaide’s Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences since mid-2012, following seven years as Dean at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne. Manx by birth, he spent much of his career at Sheffield University, where he held professorial positions in metallurgy and mechanical engineering, including a spell as Head of Mechanical Engineering.
His research spans materials science and applied mechanics, mostly applied to manufacturing and structural integrity, solving industry’s problems. He has been President of the Australian Council of Engineering Deans and is Immediate Past Chair of the Global Engineering Deans Council. He is a Fellow of Engineers Australia and the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, and is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining in the UK.
Steve Ludlam FIEAust CPEng EngExec

Steve Ludlam is a global submarine expert who was Chief Executive of naval shipbuilding company ASC Pty Ltd from 2010-2014. Before moving to Adelaide to take up this role, he was President of Submarines at Rolls-Royce plc in the United Kingdom, where he led the successful modernisation of the country’s nuclear-powered submarine program.
His career began with Rolls-Royce as a development engineer working on nuclear submarine programs. He became General Manager of the Submarine Nuclear Reactor Test Establishment and then President of Submarines, a senior executive position.
Steve holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters Degree in Nuclear Engineering. He is a Fellow of Engineers Australia, a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, UK, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineers in 2010.
In four of the past six years, he has been voted one of Engineer Australia’s 100 most influential engineers. He is currently Chairman of SA Rugby Union Ltd and a member of the Defence South Australia Advisory Board.
Michael Scott MIEAust CPEng

Michael Scott is responsible for management of GHD’s Water, Planning and Environment business within South Australia and is member of the South Australian leadership team. Michael has over 16 years experience with a background in structural engineering, although his career has spanned diverse elements of the engineering profession from a technical, geographical and leadership perspective.
Some of his career highlights include responsibility for delivery of the landuse and infrastructure master plans for the Palm Islands in Dubai, the restoration of Lake Condah, a wetland of national cultural and environmental significance located in Western Victoria and management of GHD’s Mount Gambier office.
Michael is the co-ordinator of GHD’s PDP program, focused on raising the profile of Chartered Engineers, and as part of this role has responsibility for mentoring staff through the accreditation process.
Honourable Trish White FIEAust

Trish White is an executive director of professional services and business advisory consultancy, Slingsby Taylor. Formerly, she was a senior executive of an ASX50 engineering services firm, a cabinet minister in the South Australian government and non-executive board director of several multi-billion dollar companies.
Her earlier career was with the Defence Science and Technology Organisation, and prior to that she ran national infrastructure projects in Canberra and in Queensland, where she began her career as a telecommunications engineer.
Trish holds an electrical engineering degree, is a Fellow of Engineers Australia in the Information, Telecommunications and Electronics Engineering College, a member of the College for Leadership and Management and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. She serves as a board director of Engineers Australia.

Renae Leverenz - General Manager
Renae's role as General Manager is the prime staff point of contact for Division office bearers, and manages Division staff, assets and finance in accordance with the Chief Executive’s delegations. Renae is responsible for the overall management of the South Australia Division.
Greg Parker - Member Engagement Manager
Greg manages multiple functions for the South Australia (SA) Division including member communication, sponsorship, events, governance and administration. He also supports the SA Division Committee and their school, Government and industry engagement initiatives.
Claire Faulkner - Member Engagement Officer (Part time Mon, Thurs, Fri)
Claire assists with the technical event programs for the South Australian groups, college branches and technical societies. Other responsibilities include managing the Division room bookings and venue facilities, as well as general office administration.
Eliza Paul - Member Engagement Officer (Part time Tues, Wed, Thurs)
Eliza assists with the technical event programs for the South Australian groups, college branches and technical societies. Other responsibilities include managing the Division room bookings and venue facilities, as well as general office administration.
Lucie Briscoe - Business Development Manager
Lucie is part of the national Business Development team and works closely with our Industry sector. Lucie is responsible for developing key relationships and strengthening existing partnerships for the South Australian Division, particularly with the Universities and TAFEs.
Jason Thornhill - Client Manager SA (Part time Tues, Wed, Thurs)
Jason is responsible for industry liaison management and Professional Development Programs (PDP) in South Australia, one of the four pathways that Engineers Australia offers for members to achieve Chartered Status. Jason works closely with PDP partner organisations, as part of the national Business Development team.
Sharryn Fensom - Digital Producer
Sharryn is part of the national Marketing team and is responsible for developing and delivering content and design for a variety of online and email applications across Engineers Australia.
Ashlea Klingberg - Conference and Events Coordinator
Ashlea is part of the National Conference and Events Team which is responsible for awards, conferences, seminars and other significant national corporate events. Ashlea is based in Adelaide and also coordinates major events for the South Australia Division.
Maurice Berry FIEAust CPEng - National Assessor (Part time)
Maurice is one of two assessors in the SA Division. Maurice is responsible for assessing Engineering Competency Claims (ECCs) and Engineering Competency Reports (ECRs), delivering Chartered Workshops and managing the Professional Interview Process.
Ewan Hazeldine FIEAust CPEng - National Assessor (Part time)
Ewan is one of two assessors in the SA Division. Ewan is responsible for assessing Engineering Competency Claims (ECCs) and Engineering Competency Reports (ECRs), delivering Chartered Workshops and managing the Professional Interview Process.
Eric Hobson FIEAust CPEng - National Manager Articulation (Part time)
Eric manages the articulation pathways for Affiliates, Engineering Officers and Engineering Technologists.
Kimberly Chase - Specialist Assessment Officer
Kimberly is part of the national Member Services team, providing customer service and support relating to Skills Assessment, Chartered and Registration Assessments and general membership inquiries.
Ilise Somerford - Member Services Officer
Ilise is part of the national Member Services team, providing phone-based customer service and support to members and the public.

The Australian Engineering Excellence Awards (AEEA) South Australia 2016 program seeks to identify, recognise and reward outstanding achievement in the practice of engineering and service to the profession.
The AEEA South Australia Awards 2016 is the premier event for the profession. The night promotes industry excellence across engineering projects and engineering professionals.

Engineers Australia's Individual Awards confer recognition for outstanding engineering achievements to recognise and promote those engineers who show innovation and resourcefulness in their work.
2015 South Australian Individual Awards
The 2015 Young Professional Engineer of the Year was awarded to Joanne Chong MIEAust CPEng. Joanne graduated from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil and Structural with honours.
Joanne joined WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff in 2007, attaining Chartered Status in 2010 and has worked on a diverse range of engineering projects including transport infrastructure, mining infrastructure and geothermal power plants, taking on a variety of roles from design/lead engineer to project manager.
Previously involved with FutureNet, a young professional initiative developed by Consult Australia, Joanne was nominated as the Chair in 2012. She currently manages and mentors the Professional Development Program (PDP) group at WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff.
The 2015 Professional Engineer of the Year was conferred to Andrew Skinner FIEAust CPEng, Engineering Director of Measurement Engineering Australia (MEA).
With an engineering career spanning 40 years, Andrew has worked in remote areas of Australia, Papua New Guinea and Canada before returning to Adelaide to found MEA in 1984 and carry out the three-year SA Wind Energy Survey. While running the company full-time, Andrew completed a Master’s Degree and PhD in environmental measurements.
Andrew was one of the pioneers of the renewable energy industry and MEA has built more than 2,500 systems for wind and solar monitoring, irrigated agriculture and remote weather station networks.
MEA has also developed a web-enabled radio measurement system for Australian farmers, novel soil moisture displays for African farmers, salinity sensors for farmers in Bangladesh and a new-to-world sensor for getting living plants to talk to irrigators about their state of water stress.
The 2015 Engineering Technologist of the Year was awarded to Christine Haydon TMIEAust, a Senior Lecturer and Course Co-ordinator within the School of Electronics and Computer Systems Engineering at TAFE SA.
Christine has been an active volunteer of Engineers Australia over the last 15 years and actively promotes women in engineering. She also promotes the use of technological changes and innovation for the advent of green energy and renewable energy solutions.
Christine was the first female senior official for the International bi-annual event: the World Solar Challenge and one of the 12 foundation members of Team TREV (Two Seater Renewable Energy Vehicle) for the round-the-world Zero Emissions race in 2011.
Since then she has employed innovative design and construction practices in the refitting of the University of South Australia’s electric vehicle TREV with new lithium polymer batteries and electrical systems to be able to travel long distances.
The 2015 Engineering Associate of the Year was conferred to Peter Newman AFIEAust, who has over 6 years’ hands-on experience on the new Air Warfare Destroyers with the AWD Alliance.
Peter has over 30 years’ experience, initially as a Marine Radio Surveyor, then moving into designing, installing, commissioning and maintaining Industrial and Maritime electronic and control systems. Peter has worked in government and private industry and has strong engineering, project management and contract administration expertise.
Peter’s work on the world class optic fibre project brings together a range of commercially available components, processes and test equipment into the harsh naval military environment. This is a major innovation which had to overcome the embedded “legacy” designs and has resulted in an optic fibre glass fusion welded together and enclosed in the protective sleeve of the connector with nil waste material.
Craig Gilbert Leadership Award
About Craig Gilbert
He joined Australian Construction Services, where he spent the first two years of his professional career undertaking a variety of projects, including work on airfields at Woomera and Tindal.
In 1988, he joined BC Tonkin and Associates (now Tonkin Consulting) and played a key role in developing major South Australian projects.
Of note was Craig’s contribution to the duplication of Robe Terrace and the design of the Port River Expressway. While this was happening, he also led the team selected to undertake a project of national significance, the rehabilitation of a major part of the water supply in Western Victoria. In 1993, just five years after arriving at the firm and at the age of 28, Craig became a director.
In 1997 he was appointed Deputy Managing Director and in December 2001 at the age of 36, Craig became the third Managing Director in the 48-year history of Tonkin Consulting.
During Craig’s career he displayed the most outstanding self-discipline, practical engineering ability, interpersonal skills and leadership qualities. These qualities were admired, even as a student, by his peers and served him well in his professional career. Craig passed away on 27 July 2003 at the age of 38, after a short illness.
The award has been created as a perpetual tribute to the memory of Craig Gilbert, former Managing Director of Tonkin Consulting. It is presented by the peak body of the engineering profession, Engineers Australia.
The Craig Gilbert Leadership Award is presented annually to the South Australian Engineering student who, having completed the penultimate year of their degree, has demonstrated the most outstanding self-discipline, practical engineering ability, interpersonal skills, and leadership potential amongst their peers.
Benefits of the award
The Award signifies professional recognition of the leadership qualities of the recipient and finalists, a valuable addition to the curriculum vitae of all finalists.
Employers expect good academic results from graduates. However, demonstrated leadership in graduates is more difficult to determine. The Craig Gilbert Leadership Award identifies young leaders prior to graduation and will be a valuable indicator for employers when selecting prospective employees.
Combined with good academic results, this Award will give finalists the best chance of employment with prestigious engineering practices.
The winner of the award will receive the following:
- Trophy and certificate
- Name included on an honour board displayed in the Engineers Australia premises
- $1,500 cash prize.
- In addition, finalists will receive a certificate recognising that they have been selected as a leader amongst their peers.
The award will be introduced to students early in the academic year. Universities will invite academic staff and student peers to nominate a student who they believe has exhibited outstanding leadership qualities throughout the year. There will be two students from each university nominated each year.
Following the end of year exams, nominees will be asked to submit a 500 word essay addressing leadership. In mid-December nominees will make a short presentation to the judging panel. The panel will consist of:
- Division President of Engineers Australia
- Representative of Engineers Australia
- Leader of local business
- Representative from the Gilbert family.
The winner will be presented with the Craig Gilbert Leadership Award at the Engineers Australia Sir Eric Neal Address in February the following year.

Campus Coordinator Program
Campus Coordinators are a point of contact on campus between engineering students, Engineers Australia (particularly the Young Engineers Australia – South Australia group), lecturers, Deans and industry. Campus Coordinators endeavour to assist students at their university through:
- providing ongoing student feedback to Engineers Australia
- providing contact points or an answer for student queries
- assistance with planning Division and combined YEA SA events to provide the maximum interest and benefit
- promoting the activities and role of Engineers Australia in accreditation, networking and Professional Development.
If you are in your second to third year of an engineering degree and want to expand your professional networks, showcase your innovative flair and enthusiasm for the engineering profession, then Engineers Australia’s Campus Coordinator Program is for you!
The Campus Coordinator Program is an initiative devised by Engineers Australia (EA) and the Young Engineers (YEA) committee to establish a permanent network of on-campus student engineers, supported and guided by EA. The aim is to contribute to the professional and personal development of engineering students.

- Develop relationships with engineering professionals and EA staff
- Develop your leadership capabilities.
- Actively engage fellow engineering students with EA activities and ensure that there is a strong EA presence on-campus.
